BENEFITS OF CLAY

BENEFITS OF CLAY

Clay has been widely known and used for external applications such as mud therapy in health spas. Have you ever thought about using it internally like eating clay? Yeah, I honestly haven't either. Even though I used to make mud pies as a child, I don't recall ever trying a slice. Then one day, I came across this dirt like substance and when mixed with water was not known as mud. It was called living earth or most known as clay.

Eating clay is also known as Geophagy. Animals as well as humans from all walks of life, have eaten clay for a variety of reasons. I personally have been using clay daily to brush my teeth, help during a fast, on my body and hair like a mask, on an itchy bug bite, and lots of other things. This was only the start of this incredible clay journey.

What is clay? Clay is a soft mineral substance, a product of volcanic ash that has been weathered and aged by ancient seas that are now dry lands. Clay is the smallest with the finest in grain of mineral particles of Mother Earths' crust. These particles contain silica and can be very structured in shape, like our bodies.

Clay is usually mined and tested for commercial sale to consumers. This process is apparently the safety standards used for the consumer. Although some cultures around the world will use dirt right from the land with no second thought or problems. There are many clay types and uses around the world. Also depending upon the origin of each clay type, each has it's own beneficial uses, chemical compositions, and properties. This means that clay is so unique that no two clay types are identical and different origin sourced clay will have it's own mineral compositions for each clay source.

How does clay work? Scientifically, clay consists of tiny particles that can absorb large amounts of water, like a sponge. Clay has negative ions and an electric charge between each clay layer. This means clay ADSORBS and ABSORBS heavy and even radioactive metals, free radicals, and other unwanted products from our bodies. Then it deprives these products of nutrition as well as oxygen. The positive ions or unwanted, bad stuff in our bodies is then excreted through our waste. This beneficial process alone makes clay a natural antibacterial agent. Basically, clay goes where it is needed in our bodies and eliminates the rest. As I mentioned above, there are many different types of clay. Some common names include:

Bentonite: This type of clay is also known as smectite. This clay can absorb 40-50 times its weight when mixed with water. Bentonite Clay is like a magnet when activated by water due to it's strong negative electromagnetic charge. In turn, this body magnet pulls positive ions, the metals and other toxins, which is then excreted through our waste. This clay may also be known as or called Montmorllonite or Fullers Earth which is a main constituent of bentonite clay along with 67 other trace minerals. When this clay is medicinally prepared, it is called diosmectite.

Kaolin: This is a low shrink-swell capacity clay which is not as absorbent. It has a low cation exchange and is known as “white cosmetic clay”. This type of clay has been a big ingredient for products such as Kaopectate, Rolaids, and Maalox. These over-the-counter products used kaolin to treat stomach issues such as heartburn, acid reflux, and other indigestion problems. However, it is no longer used because the USFDA has considered it “ineffective”.

Attapulgite: This clay is very absorbent and quite similar to Bentonite Clay. Along with Kaolin, Attapulgite was also an active ingredient in Kaopectate until April 2003. Again the USFDA rejected and discontinued its use due to “insufficient” or “lack of evidence” of usage results.

According to the USFDA, they had also “disproved” official studies for these ingredients found in diarrheal medications. Their reasoning was the ingestion of Kaolin and Attapulgite were considered gastric demulcents. The demulcents had a main side effect to impair or slow down absorption of antibiotics, hormones, and heart medications. This side effect would increase the toxicity of these and other medications that coat the digestive track. Of course in my opinion, Big Pharma would love the money made from their pushed pharmaceuticals more than the actual patient just eat some dirt and get better all on their own.

Wikipedia “experts” defines clay as “Medicinal clay in folk medicine goes back to prehistoric times and the first recorded use of clay goes back to ancient Mesopotamia”. These “experts” are somewhat truthful at times. Clay can be used medicinally and is quite ancient. Clay has been used in all cultures back in ancient days and clay is a beneficial resource still being used now.

So, what about clay makes it medicinal? Clay is a natural source of all minerals used and consumed by humans and animals for a variety of ailments such as aches, pains, infections, soothe irritations, cure wounds, fevers, food poisoning, and any gastrointestinal issues including nausea, vomiting, constipation, and diarrhea to name a few common ailments.

Poor bowel health leads to and tends to aggravate every known ailment and dis-ease. This also includes our mental state sometimes. What's your mood like for a day if you are unable to pass a bowel movement? Test that out for yourself and you'll see what I mean. Toxins will keep piling up and really poison our bodies. As it sits and gets old (petrify), our bodies will not be able to tell what is live or dead food trying to get through the colon. Our bodies will eventually try to gets it nutrition from this toxic waste. Putting this much strain and stress on the body not being able to properly drain waste matter is the basic cause to any dis-ease. Clay is living earth and acts immediately in the digestive journey. Clay uses the bulking agent method. Clay grabs the crap and stimulates the muscular contractions to move the stool. The actual clay that grabbed the toxins is also eliminated together, keeping the toxins from being absorbed again into our bloodstream.

Clay is not just medicinal when there is an ailment. Clay has been used in many cultures to prevent famine. Clay can also be used in remedies for preventative measures to your individual health care needs such as hygiene, mineral supplements, and preventative environmental toxins from continuing its dis-ease path inside our bodies.

Clay is commonly used in spa and beauty treatments such as facials masks, mud wraps and baths. Along with some make-up products. Clay for these treatments is best for softening hair and skin, along with skin clearing and cleaning. Basically, just getting you looking young again is you so desire.

Keep in mind, clay is not a “cure by quickness”. It's just another tool to our best health. Around 2-4 weeks, the results will be amazingly noticeable. Better digestion, great bowel regulation, physical energy, more alert, clearer skin, emotional uplifts, a stimulated immune system with much more resistance to illnesses, and so much more. You will notice and feel the results, just not right away.

A lot of people in the United States are becoming too dependent on doctors, operations, vaccines and pharmaceuticals. This dependency on the medical industry is in my opinion, laziness to research natural remedies that have been used tried and true since humans have been on earth. Some women will crave dirt during their pregnancies. Kids love playing in the sandbox and making mud pies even nibble of both here and there. The medical industry wants to make money but, most people follow their natural instincts. If you are dependent on prescription medications, please research thoroughly for intake of clay before or after times of your medications. This research will help reduce toxicity from pharmaceuticals. If you take vitamin supplements, you will find that clay will enhance or even expand these supplements. Clay does not have any addiction qualities. You can keep using or come to a complete stop with no withdrawal effects.

I personally prefer to take a bit of clay in a more liquid form several times a day. I want to clean out my body often especially in today's environmental toxins in the air, water, & our food. Speaking of water, in order for clay to perform properly, it needs to absorb water. Using clay will require drinking lots of water to keep up with hydration. So, another thing you may notice is sometimes while our bodies are trying to detox, even through clay, we will actually feel worse. We cannot worry about a healing crisis too much even if it happens as a cycle. It will pass and we will feel better than ever once it does. Our bodies know what to do, just flow with it.

I will say this again, Clay goes where it is needed in our bodies (inside and out) and eliminates the rest. Also clay cannot be scientifically duplicated. Knowing the source of your clay and the unique benefit clay can provide is of most importance.

Mental health is so important. To stay mentally healthy, being physically healthy tends to bring about the mental. This can also be visa, versa as well. They just go together no matter what. I just wanted to share with others and introduce what could help in both areas. I have learned and am still always learning that our physical health literally depends on only 3 basic needs to even get started to optimal body health. Doing these 3 basic needs will most definitely boost your mentality as well.

I believe clay is another one of Mother Earth's mysteries of course, beautiful and abundant for all of us. For now, these are the 3 basic needs we all probably need to start immediately:

  1. Eating good and nourishing foods. (This does include pure water)

  2. The body's ability to properly absorb the nutrients of food (and water) so we don't starve our cells.

  3. Our bodies must properly eliminate all waste matter.

Best journey ahead to all those out there willing to give it a go!
